An Orthodontist is a dentist who has completed a further 3 years of full-time training on a specialist training programme which is recognised by the Dental Council of Ireland. A full list of Orthodontic Specialists can be found on the Dental Council of Ireland website.

At the first visit a full examination is carried out and records such as photographs, necessary radiographs and impressions for study models are taken. A detailed analysis of your records will then be performed to devise the best treatment plan for you. This treatment plan will be discussed with you in detail at the second visit once your records have been assessed. The cost of the consultation is €80 and this covers the cost of the two appointments.

The upper front teeth are prominent and protrude excessively over the lower teeth

Orthodontic treatment can begin at any age. Dr. Stokes recommends children to be seen between 8 and 9 years of age for initial assessment. In the vast majority of cases, orthodontic treatment is delayed until the patient is aged 10 or 11 however there are rare exceptions when we need to begin treatment before the age of 10.

Yes, orthodontic treatment can be carried out on both children and adults. Approximately thirty percent of patients today are adults and there has been much advancement in recent years in both the materials and treatment options available.

No, you do not need to be referred by a dentist but we do recommend that you continue to see your general dentist every 6 months for cleanings and for routine dental check-ups.

Orthodontic treatment times tend to vary on a case-by-case basis but the average treatment time is 18 months. Treatment times are affected by a number of factors including the severity of the presenting problem, patient compliance, the need to keep regular appointments and to maintain excellent oral hygiene during treatment.

The placement of fixed braces on your teeth does not hurt but there may be some mild soreness or discomfort for 2-3 days following placement of your brace as your teeth start to move. It normally takes a week or two for your lips and cheeks to get used to the brace on your teeth.
